Memorial service at Mullaghmore to mark 40th anniversary of Mountbatten murder

A service to mark the 40th anniversary of the murder of Lord Louis Mountbatten has taken place in County Sligo this morning.

Lord Mountbatten was killed in 1979 after members of the Provisional IRA blew up his fishing boat off the coast of Mullaghmore, in north Sligo.

Nicholas Knatchbull, Paul Maxwell and the Dowager Lady Brabourne were all killed in the bombing.

Local clergymen Rev Isacc Hannan, Archdeacon of Elphin and Ardagh, and Canon Tom Hever, parish priest of Rathcormac, took part in today’s ceremony.

Revd. Hanna recalled his memories from this day 40 years ago, when 18 British soldiers were also killed by the IRA at Warrenpoint, Co Down.
