Festive season arrives early in Tubbercurry

One Sligo town will be seeing Christmas lights much earlier this year . . . they are going up in Tubbercurry in the coming days.

But it’s not for the festive season.

It’s a temporary measure as the South Sligo town prepares for a television film crew.

It’s the filming of Castlebar, Co Mayo’s native Sally Rooney’s second novel ‘Normal People’ for the BBC.

The novel is set in County Sligo and traces the relationship between two young people Connell and Marianne.

Tubbercurruy Chamber of Commerce is helping out with the production; one of its tasks is to hang Christmas lights on Emmet Street to set the tone for a festive scene.

The filming will also include shots from in local pubs Killorans and Nathy Brennan’s and in the local SuperValu, where the proprietor is Gearoid Surlis.
