More than 2,600 women in NW waiting to see gynaecologist



More than 2,600 women across the north west are waiting to see a gynaecologist.

Of those, more than 1, 170 are waiting in excess of 12 months.

New figures show 875 women are waiting to see a gynaecologist at Sligo University Hospital.

225 of them are waiting more than a year.

1,783 are waiting to see a gynaecologist at Letterkenny University Hospital, and here 948 are waiting more than 12 months.

Overall throughout the country, one in five women who are waiting to see a gynaecologist for more than a year.

And there has been a 40 percent increase in the length of the waiting list over the last five years.

The Irish Hospital Consultants Association says the consultant recruitment and retention crisis is a major cause of the delays.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Peter Boylan says our waiting lists for outpatients are among the worst in the world.
