Delay in issuing Turf Cutting Cessation Scheme payments criticised

The delay in issuing Turf Cutting Cessation Scheme payments for people living in north west region is being criticised.

The scheme was put in place by the Government for those affected after cutting turf on raised bogs in special areas of conservation was banned.

Under the scheme people are entitled to compensation of €1,500 per year, for 15 years or, where possible the relocation to non-designated bogs where they can continue to cut turf.

Chairman of the Turfcutters Association, Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice, says there is a major back-log with the payment system with some people who sourced their fuel earlier in the year still waiting to receive their annual allowance.
