Sligo Rovers trounce Glebe 8-0 in FAI Cup

Sligo Rovers recorded their biggest ever win in the Extra.ie FAI Cup on Friday night with an 8-0 victory against non-League Glebe North in Balbriggan.

David Cawley and Kris Twardek both scored hat-tricks, with Regan Donelon and Dante Leverock also finding the net as Liam Buckley’s side completely outplayed their Leinster Senior League opponents.

It’s the club’s biggest competitive win since they beat Galway United by the same scoreline at the old Terryland Park in the league back in 2011

First-half goals from Cawley and a fine-long range effort from Donelon gave Rovers a  2-0 lead at half-time.

They upped the tempo in the second period, and the goals continued to flow but Cawley completing his hat-trick with two more high-quality finishes.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Finn Harps, as they lost 1-0 to Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium. Bohemians came from 2-0 down to beat Shelbourne 3-2, while Cork City needed extra-time and penalties to beat Cabinteely.

The draw for the second round takes place on Monday.
