Walk commemorating the route taken by Spanish Armada survivors taking place on Saturday.

A walk commemorating the route taken by Spanish Armada survivors more than 400 years ago is taking place on Saturday.

It’s following in the footsteps of the 900 survivors of the La Duquesa Santa Ana which ran aground at Louhros More Bay, Co. Donegal in September 1588.

The men made their way to Killybegs harbour in the hopes of getting a ship back to their home in Spain.

This was not to be the case.

An estimated 1,300 men were crammed into the La Girona which set sail for Scotland; the ship sank off the coast of Antrim leaving only 9 survivors.

Paula Harvey is the Chair of the Donegal Glenties, Ardara and Portnoo Heritage and History Group.

She describes the route being taken.
