Minister for Education says small schools are ‘the heart of the community’

The Minister for Education says small schools are ‘the heart of the community’.

Speaking at Oideas Gael in Glencolmcille, Co Donegal yesterday evening, Minister Joe McHugh was responding to questions raised over a recent EU report on class sizes, with Ireland among the highest in Europe.

Almost one quarter of students in the country are in classes of 30 or more, the majority of these in urban areas.

Minister McHugh says the centralisation of planning permissions is putting real pressure on rural schools.
