Local concerns raised over state forestry review

A member of the Save Leitrim group says he has serious concerns about a review which is being carried out into how the State processes forestry planting applications.

The move follows a similar review in Scotland which is credited with increasing the creation of new forestry areas in the country.

Opposition groups says afforestation is having a detrimental impact on rural communities in Co Leitrim.

The Forest Statistics Ireland 2019 report published by the Department of Agriculture stated 18.9pc of Leitrim was under forestry -Save Leitrim claim that figure is actually much higher.

Fianna Fail Cllr and member of Save Leitrim, Justin Warnock says he thinks forestry applications could be fast-tracked as a result of this review.
