Sligo Traveller Support Group welcome safeguarding of ‘Cant’

A Traveller Support Group in Sligo is welcoming the announcement that ‘Cant’ has been accepted into a United Nations list of those languages in need of urgent safeguarding.

UNESCO says the language, also known as ‘Gammon’ requires urgent measures to keep it alive.

Tinsmithing has also been added to the Inventory of Intangible Culture, as only a handful of members of the travelling community currently practice the craft.

Manager of the Sligo Traveller Support Group, Bernadette Maughan says this is positive news for generations to come.
