Blasting works start on route of new N4 route between Collooney and Castlebaldwin

Blasting works are starting on the route of the new N4 route between Collooney and Castlebaldwin.

They will not affect traffic on the N4 and there will be only about one blast a week.

The blasting works, to remove rock, will take place in the townland of Carrownagark, about four kilometres from Castlebaldwin.

It is proposed to carry out one blast weekly, on a Monday – and this is expected to continue for about eight months.

A special audible warning procedure will take place before and after the blasting works.

Three minutes before the blast, a siren will sound for 30 seconds.

Immediately prior to firing, there will be three short siren blasts — with the explosion after the third.

Afterwards, and following an inspection, the all-clear will be indicated by two short siren sounds.

Sligo County Council say the firing will be done only after the appointed shotfirer has ensured that the danger zone is clear.
