Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring was in Drumshanbo this morning to officially launch the 3rd phase of the Shannon Blueway.
The newest connection runs from the Lough Allen Hotel up to Blackrock, connecting with the current route that will take walkers and cyclists to Leitrim Village.
Speaking at the launch, Waterways Ireland Chief Executive John McDonagh says that both Greenways and Blueways bring economic benefits.
There was a large representation of Leitrim Councillors at todays event including Lar Power, the Leirtim County Council Chief Executive.
Mr Power says getting the Blueway up and running is a collaborative effort.
Minister Michael Ring delivered an impassioned speech about the future of rural Ireland quoting low unemployment figures and more investment opportunities in the future.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Ring insists his department, the government and Leitrim County Council have many plans for future investment in the county.
However, not everyone was happy at todays announcement.
Independent Leitrim Councillor, Des Guckian attended todays launch with a ‘Save the West’ placard.
While welcoming all investments in rural Ireland, he says the current level of funding is only a drop in the ocean.
Minister Ring disagrees.
