Minister leads new initiative to keep small schools open



A new initiative to strengthen small schools ahead of an expected fall in primary pupil numbers is being headed up by the Minister of Education and Donegal TD Joe McHugh and the Rural Development Minister, Michael Ring.

The new is initiative is seeking ideas on how best to sustain small schools which typically have four teachers or fewer many of which are situated in rural areas.

Minister Joe McHugh says he is looking for key stakeholders such as those who teach, manage and support small schools to share their experiences in the hope of developing a policy of sustaining and strengthening small Primary schools.

Small schools are a key player in Ireland’s success when it comes to attracting major employers to locating here.
