Cllr Bree to speak at Gralton event in Leitrim this weekend

An event to honour the memory of well-known Leitrim socialist Jimmy Gralton is taking place this weekend.

The event will coincide with the annual Bonfire night crossroads dance in Efferinagh on Sunday evening.

Gralton was the only Irishman ever deported by a native government and died in New York in 1945.

In 2015, a campaign was launched to exonerate Gralton by officially rescinding the deportation order and offering an apology to his family.

This year there will be a re-enactment of his first homecoming with actor Donal O’Kelly playing the part of Gralton at 6pm where he will be greeted by members of the Gralton family and the local community.

One of the guest speakers at the event will be Independent Socialist Cllr Declan Bree.
