Minister Ross accused of favouritism over airport funding

A Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fail TD is accusing Shane Ross of showing favouritism towards pet projects and his Independent Alliance colleagues when it comes to allocating funding.

It’s after the Transport Minister allocated 5 million euro to Waterford Airport, which hasn’t seen a commercial flight in three years.

Only last week, there were calls for funding to ensure the future of Sligo Airport at Strandhill, which is a base for the Air Corp rescue helicopter.

According to reports, Shane Ross rejected the advice of spending officials by allocating funding to Waterford Airport.

But Sligo/Leitrim TD Marc MacSharry says it’s just more of the same from Minister Ross.

Meanwhile, Minister Ross has defended his actions, saying the funding represents a 40 percent investment in the airport at Waterford, with the remaining funding being provided by private investors and local authorities.

But Deputy MacSharry says he wants to see Sligo being treated the same as Waterford.
