Leitrim abortion rights campaigner says accessibility remains an issue

An abortion rights campaigner in Leitrim says she is not at all surprised that women are continuing to import abortion pills illegally through the internet as accessibility remains a big issue.

This is despite the change in legislation since January allowing free terminations up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.

There were nine seizures of 104 of these medicines between January and April, according to figures obtained from the Health Products Regulatory Authority.

Around 320 GPs are now signed up to provide medical abortions, but it’s understood there are still no doctors willing to deliver the service in Co Sligo and Leitrim.

Joanne Neary from Leitrim Abortion Rights says there are a number of factors why women are still buying these pills from the internet.
