New car registrations down . . . but sales of electric vehicles growing

Car sales across the north west region are down compared to this time last year.

Official statistics released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show the total number of new car registrations for the month of May are down over 20% in Leitrim.

In total 340 vehicles were sold between January and May 2018 compared with 269 this year.

Sales were down by 10% in Donegal and 7% in Sligo during the same time period.

However nationally new electric vehicle registrations continue to grow month on month with a total of 1,902 cars registered so far this year, surpassing the total number for 2018 which was 1,233.

SIMI Director General Brian Cooke says sales overall year to date have been disappointing.
