Liverpool’s Champions League winner has Glenfarne family connections

As Liverpool defender Andy Robertson played his part in Liverpool’s Champions League final win against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid last Saturday night, his success was being cheered loudly by his family relations from Glenfarne in north Leitrim.

Andy’s grandmother Peggy Simpson (nee McGurril) and her sister Tess McClement were born and raised in the north Leitirm community before moving to Scotland more than half a century ago.

Speaking to Ocean FM Sport from her home in Scotland on Sunday, Tess McClement, whose maiden name was McGurril, spoke of her delight and watching her grand-nephew win Europe’s top football prize with Liverpool. She recounted how Andy visited Glenfarne on several occasions in his youth.
