Supreme Court ruling on PAC will not affect questioning, says MacSharry

A Sligo/Leitrim TD who’s a member of the Dail Public Accounts Committee says he believes the Supreme Court ruling in the Angela Kerins case does not impact on the robustness of the questioning allowed of people who come before the committee.

The Supreme Court found the Committee acted unlawfully in its treatment of the former Rehab Group chief executive.

Deputy MacSharry was not on the committee at the time.

The ruling is regarded highly significant, with major ramifications for the manner in which Oireachtas committees conduct their business in future.

But while Deputy Marc MacSharry, one of the more robust questioners on the current Public Accounts Committee, believes the ruling does not impact on the questioning of public servants or the job done by people, agencies and groups on behalf of the State.
