Voting gets underway in local, European Parliament elections, and divorce referendum



It’s election and referendum day with polling stations opening about now (7am).

About 214,000 people across the north west are eligible to vote.

There are 57,297 in Sligo, made up of more than 24,000 in the Ballymote/Tubbercurry area, about 16,000 in Sligo/Drumcliffe, and just under 17,000 in Sligo/Strandhill.

In Leitrim, there’s just under 28,000 people eligible to vote, with just over 9,000 each in Manorhamilton and Carrick on Shannon electoral areas, and over 9,800 in the Ballinamore area.

In Donegal, there are just over 129,300 people who can vote, with 22,481 of these in the south Donegal area.

In addition to choosing county councillors, voters will also be electing MEPS, as well as voting in the divorce referendum.

Referendum Commission Chairperson Tara Burns says it’s important people use their vote today.
