Minister for social protection called on to pay the Domiciliary Allowance when children in hospital

A local election candidate and Fianna Fail cllr is calling on the Minister for Social Protection to continue to pay the Domiciliary Allowance when children are sick in hospital for long periods of time.

At present payment may continue for up to 13 weeks if the child is getting medical or other treatment in hospital

However, even after being approved for the allowance, the payments and the knock-on entitlements are not triggered until the child is discharged from hospital.

The allowance is a monthly payment for children under 16 years of age with a severe disability.

Cllr Seamus Kilgannon says it doesn’t make sense that families of children are given less financial help at a time when they need it most.
