The HSE is being urged to appoint a carers development officer to cover county Leitrim.
The calls are being made by Independent local election candidate Jamie Murphy.
Murphy, who will contest a seat on Leitrim County Council in the Manorhamilton Municipal District, says there are approximately 1,500 carers in the county at present.
He says many carers are vulnerable to financial difficulties, social isolation as well as poor physical and mental health.
