James Newton wins 2019 Irish Amateur Open at Rosses Point



England’s James Newton is the 2019 Flogas Irish Amateur Open champion after a five-shot victory at County Sligo Golf Club on Sunday.

Newton, who’s from Macclesfield, finished on nine-under-par for his four rounds. He finished five shots ahead of Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell, who was also runner on the same course at the West of Ireland in April.

Ronan Mullarney from Galway, who set a new course record 62 in round one on Thursday, eventually finish in fifth position on level par.

Neither of the two local golfers in the field, Séan Flanagan and Ruairi O’Connor, made the cut, which came after 54 holes on Saturday evening.
