Sligo council honour for Dervish to mark 30 years performing

World renowned Sligo-based traditional music group Dervish is to be given a special reception by the cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council to mark the band’s 30 years performing.

It will be hosted by Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Barker on May 30th at County Hall.

The proposal to give the group a civic reception had been proposed by Cllr Marie Casserly at a previous council meeting but she came in for criticism for not following previous protocol, custom and practice.

Usually, proposals for such receptions are not brought before a public meeting until the mayor or cathaoirleach are first consulted by a councillor.

But Cllr Casserly says she is now delighted that the cathaoirleach has agreed to host a reception for Dervish.
