Donegal councillors pay tribute to Barry O Neill

Tributes were paid at yesterday’s meeting of councillors from the Donegal Municipal District to outgoing councillor Barry O Neill.

O Neill, a Fine Gael councillor for the past 15 years, has decided not to seek reelection.

He said it was ironic that yesterday’s meeting was his last as €86,000 was approved at the meeting for a road called after the late businessman and TD Jim White who, Cllr O Neill said, inspired him to go into politics.

Councillors complimented Cllr O Neill for his work and passion for his area, including seconding the motions of other councillors when he thought their proposals were good for the locality and its people.

In his concluding speech at yesterday’s meeting — the last before the coming election — Cllr O Neill indicated it was unlikely he would return to politics.

But he did not completely rule out the possibility.
