Leitrim no match for Roscommon

Leitrim were comprehensively outplayed by Roscommon in last Sunday’s Connacht senior football championship quarter-final at Dr Hyde Park, as Anthony Cunningham’s side ran out 3-17 to 0-12 winners.

The dye was cast in the opening half as Leitrim struggled to contain Roscommon’s running game with midfielder Shane Killoran finding the back of the Leitrim net twice in that half. A third goal from Niall Kilroy followed and Roscommon led by 3-6 to 0-7 at the interval.

Leitrim managed just three points from play all afternoon on an afternoon when little went right for Terry Hyland’s side. Shane Moran showed well at times for Leitrim at full forward but the other Shane – Quinn – got the line in the second-half after picking up a second yellow card. By then, Roscommon were already coasting to victory.

Listen to his interview with Ocean FM Sport’s John Lynch after the game:

For the last three years, Roscommon have now beaten Leitrim by 13, 17 and 14 points in the championship.

The win sets up a semi-final meeting for Rosommon with Mayo on May 26th while Leitrim head for round 1 of the football qualifiers. The draw for round 1 will be made on Monday, May 27th.
