Sligo Rovers win classic ‘Rovers’ derby 2-1

Two goals of the highest qualify from Daryl Fordyce and Jack Keaney helped Sligo Rovers to a memorable 2-1 win against leaders Shamrock Rovers in Saturday night’s SSE Aitricity League Premier Divion game at the Showgrounds.

In front of a crowd of 2,053, Rovers produced one of their best displays of the season so far.

All the goals came in the second half. Fordyce fired the home side in front on 55 minutes with a delighted left-footed stroke from outside the angle of the penalty area.

But Shamrock Rovers drew level moments later when former Sligo player Aaron Greene turned smartly to volley the ball past Mitchell Beeney after fine approach play from the impressive Jack Byrne and Trevor Clarke.

But the ‘home’ Rovers weren’t finished yet.

With 25 minutes remaining, Jack Keaney cracked a superb free-kick from 35 yards out to the top corner of the net.

Listen back to Saturday night’s commentary highlights on The Rovers Hour with Austin O’Callaghan and Gavin Dykes:

The goal celebrations saw some visiting fans come onto the pitch to try and confront to the goalscorer. At least one object was thrown onto the pitch as well – but the incidents after the goal and at the end of the game – were quickly dealt with by Gardaí and stewards.
