Muted welcome given to new Garda cars

The news that Gardai across the North West are to be provided with a new batch of BMW X5 vehicles in helping them to combat crime has been given a muted welcome the GRA.

The new vehicles will be assigned to cover the counties of Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan, Louth and Monaghan.

local GRA representative Brendan O’ Connor says that although the introduction of the new vehicles are to be welcomed, how effective they will be in covering such a large geographical area remains to be seen, especially with a number of Garda vehicles needing to be replaced and upgraded.

Mr O’ Connor says the current Garda fleet is struggling to deal with those who commit minor traffic offences never mind attempting to apprehend criminal gangs that are using high powered vehicles.
