Claims that Connaughton Road cark park is now a fire risk for those living there

It’s been claimed the extended Traveller family living in the public car park in Connaughton Road in Sligo is now at serious risk because of alleged breaches of the fire regulations.

Bernadette Maughan, manager of the Sligo Traveller Support Group, says there are now fears of a repeat of a situation in 2015 in Carrickmines in Dublin when 10 people died in a fire in a halting site.

She says the people living in the Connaughton Road Car Park are now at greater risk since clean-up work done last week by Sligo County Council, backed up by gardai.

That work has resulted in part of the car park having been cordoned off, resulting in caravans now having to be parked closer together.
