North Sligo AC athlete in top 50 finish at London marathon

North Sligo Athletic club’s Féidhlim McGowan recorded his best ever finish in a major marathon by finishing 43rd overall, behind the elite runners, at the 2019 London Marathon.

More than 40,000 athletes took part in what is the biggest marathon internationally.

McGowan’s time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 20 seconds, was the second-fastest time ever by a Sligo person for the 26.2 miles. Only Sligo AC’s Michael Hannon has run quicker over the marathon distance.

The 27-year-old Drumcliffe native was competing in just his second marathon, having previously run the Dublin marathon in 2016.

McGowan, who’s currently studying for a Masters in economics in Nottingham, spoke to Ocean FM Sport after his race:

Féidhlim was also running for the Samos Volunteers charity, an independent group of volunteers which is trying to help tackle the refugee crisis on the Greek island of Samos. More info is available here.
