Sligo Co Co carrying out ‘clean-up’ operation at Connaughton Road car park



Sligo County Council say it is carrying out a clean-up operation at Connaughton Road car park today.

Around 40 members of the Gardai along with representatives from the local authority attended the scene this morning.

Members of the McGinley family have been living in the car park for the past 30 years.

Sligo County Council says it has received numerous complaints relating to the activity of those resident in Connaughton Road car park and the manner in which these activities detracts from the area.

As a result, a spokesperson for the council says a clean-up of the area is underway today which will involve the removal of end-of-life vehicles, scrap, waste, containers and other materials.

Repairs are also being carried out to height control barriers installed by the council at the car park.

It’s says the barrier was the subject of an attack in which it was damaged and rendered ineffective.

It’s understood part of the car park area cleared of waste today will be restored and returned to its original condition.

Sligo County Council says the Gardaí are in attendance today to ensure the safety of the construction workers and maintenance of public order.

A spokesperson for the local authority added it is not in a position to comment on discussions with the residents of the car park concerning provision of accommodation or offers of accommodation made to individual families.
