Calls to reassess electronic sheep tagging system

Calls are being made to reassess the electronic sheep tagging system.

The system was initially slated to be implemented in October 2018 however this was extended to the 1st of June 2019.

Vice Chair of the IFA Sheep Committee, Kevin Comiskey, is seeking a meeting with the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed.

The problem arises from requiring farmers to use two tags for the sheep however under EU law one is sufficient; this can be expensive an time consuming for farmers.

Kevin Comiskey also says that a number of sectors are not ready for the new system and that farmers are already out of pocket on the compulsory scheme.
