Play-off heartbreak for Sligo rugby team

All-Ireland League promotion semi-final result
Blackrock College 28 Sligo 27

Sligo’s bid to secure a second consecutive promotion in rugby’s All-Ireland League ended in Dublin on Saturday, when the concession of a late try in added time, saw them lose to Blackrock College by a single point – 28-27 at Stradbrook.

It was cruel luck on Paddy Pearson’s side as they had been in front for almost all of the game – and still led by six points going into the 82nd minute of a gripping contest.

But a succssion of penalties against Sligo presented Blackrock with a key try-scoring opportunity – and they took it in added-time – with the successful conversion giving the Rock a one-point win.

Sligo scrumhalf and captain Ryan Feehily, recently named Connacht’s Senior Club Player of the Year, gave his postmatch verdict to Ocean FM Sport’s Cathal Mullaney.

Sligo head coach Paddy Pearson paid tribute to the efforts of his team.
