Water Warriors group welcome green light for treatment plant

A group campaigning for the upgrade of a water treatment plant in south Sligo is welcoming confirmation from the Heritage Minister that works can proceed at the facility.

The Water Warriors Group had mounted a campaign for improvements to the water quality supplied by the Lough Talt Water Scheme after tests revealed cryptosporidium was present.

A boil water notice remains in place for over 13,000 households, however there were difficulties in obtaining planning permission for the plant as it is situated in a Special Area of Conservation.

Spokesperson Kellie Cadman says the first step in their process is complete but the group want to see an interim measure put in place as construction may take some time to be completed.
