Lough Talt treatment plant upgrade given the go-ahead

It’s understood the Minister for Culture Heritage and the Gaeltacht has given the go-head for the proposed upgrading works to carried out at the Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant in South Sligo.

Cryptosporidium was discovered in the water supply affecting over 13,000 homes, resulting in a Boil Water Notice being reissued in January after it only having been lifted in October 2018.

Lough Talt is in a Special Area of Conservation, which means strict conditions are imposed for the planning permission needed for upgrades to the plant to treat the water.

Local Fine Gael Election candidate in the Tubbercurry Ballymote area Martin Connolly says it’s his understanding that Minister Joespha Madigan has now instructed the Minister for Planning Eoghan Murphy that works can proceed despite the sensitive location of the plant.
