Calls for Leitrim Co Co to protect county from afforestation

Leitrim County Council has been urged to be more proactive when it comes to fighting proposed forestry plantations.

The calls were made at this week’s Manorhamilton Municipal District meeting by Fianna Fáil Councillor and local election candidate Justin Warnock.

It’s after he attended an oral hearing on behalf of the Save Leitrim Group in Portlaoise which concerned an afforestation licence at Shass and Tullyclevaun which are situated close to Ballinaglera in County Leitrim.

Although the council’s planning department had raised concerns in relation to the licence they had no representation at the hearing.

The council later confirmed to Mr Warnock that they were unaware of the hearing taking place on the date in question.

Councillor Warnock is now seeking the local authority to increase its efforts to protect the environment of low capacity and high sensitivity.
