Election candidate condemns delay in diabetes unit

A Sligo election candidate is condemning the delay in providing funding for a new diabetes unit at Sligo University Hospital.

Fianna Fail candidate Donal Gilroy claims it has resulted in unsafe prefabs with no planning permission continuing to be used.

Gilroy, who is also joint chair of the Sligo branch of Diabetes Ireland, says that a lorry servicing the site of the new mental health unit at the hospital recently slid into one of the pre-fabs when a child was in attendance.

He says people who need those services deserve better than a box on the side of a road between an oil tank and boiler house

He told Ocean FM News that by raising a planning objection in relation to the pre-fabs, he hopes it will help speed up the building of the long-overdue new diabetes day centre.
