Councillor says debt collection agencies ‘pursuing cancer patients for treatment costs’

It’s emerged that a number of cancer patients in the north west are receiving correspondence from debt collect companies for costs incurred during their treatment.

It’s claimed these demands for payments are adding further stress to the patients and also having a negative impact on their recovery.

Leitrim Sinn Fein Councillor and local election candidate Padraig Fallon says he has been contacted by a number of local people who are receiving treatment for cancer and are also being ‘hounded’ for payment by debt collection agencies.

Councillor Fallon says that medical cards should be issued immediately to patients that receive a cancer diagnosis, especially as the majority of cases he has worked on have all been awarded medical cards on appeal.
