Accusations of ‘betrayal’ over ‘delay’ in holding water referendum

A Sligo local election candidate has accused Fianna Fail and Fine Gael of a ‘huge betrayal’ by delaying the holding of a referendum to ensure the country’s water remains in public ownership.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has insisted the government will hold a referendum but that such a vote must ‘not be rushed.’

He said the government had decided against holding it in May because of the need to get the language right over the contentious issue of group and private water scheme

But Independent Corey Whyte says the Irish people should be allowed have their say in ensuring water supplies are not privatised.
