Peter Casey to run for European Parliament

Peter Casey is to run as a candidate for the European Parliament in the Midlands North West Constituency.

The Independent, who came second to Michael D Higgins in the presidential election, will register his candidacy this afternoon in Castlebar courthouse.

Last week, Independent MEP Marian Harkin announced she would not be seeking re-election to the European Parliament, where she has served for almost 15 years.

Today, another Independent, Peter Casey, confirmed he will be running.

The 60-year old Derry native and Donegal resident says he will be ‘the voice for rural Ireland at the heart of the EU.’

Speaking to Ocean FM News today, he outlined why he has decided to run for Europe.

He also has some very definite ideas about the provision of broadband to rural Ireland.

He says Ireland has, in the past, been an example when it comes to some aspects of preserving the environment.

But he is adamant we need to show more leadership when it comes to dealing with plastics.

And he believes there should be special incentives to encourage students to come to rural Ireland.
