Sligo County Council calls for boycott of Eurovision

Sligo County Council is calling for an Irish boycott of the Eurovision.

At its monthly meeting this week, the local authority voted to call on RTÉ to boycott this years’ Eurovision Song Contest due to take place in Israel.

The proposals was jointly put forward by Cllrs. Declan Bree, Gino O’Boyle and Chris MacManus and was unanimously adopted.

The motion sought councillors to boycott the Eurovision on May 14th, due to what it says is Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands and ‘human rights abuses’.

Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign Spokesperson Betty Purcell says Sligo County Council is the first in the country to take such action.
