Manorhamilton candidate calls for move away from single-use plastic

A local election candidate in the Manorhamilton municipal district is calling for people to move away from single-use plastic items.

He is also hoping that more local businesses, organisations and public buildings will get involved in the Refill Ireland scheme that is helping Irish towns and cities become more tap-water refill friendly.

Local Independent candidate in Manorhamilton Jamie Murphy is making the call after legislation was introduced earlier this week prohibiting public bodies including schools and hospitals from purchasing single-use plastic items for use on their premises.

The Manorhamilton native says the initiative is aimed at encouraging private businesses, social enterprises and public buildings to sign up to Refill Ireland and provide a free public facility for people to refill their reusable bottles.
