MacSharry calls for food regulator or ombudsman

A Sligo/Leitrim TD is calling for a food regulator or ombudsman to ensure beef farmers get a fair price for their produce.

During a debate in the Dail yesterday, Deputy Marc MacSharry says action needs to be taken now to support these farmers, particularly because of the impact Brexit will have on the suckler-rearing region of the north west.

He was speaking on a Fianna Fáil motion proposing 14 policy actions to highlight the urgent action needed to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers’ in the beef sector.

He said there are numerous anti-competitive practices in the current beef producing system.
