Cllr calls for access to abuse allegation records

A local election candidate is calling on the Taoiseach and the Minister for Children to allow public access to all records on abuse allegations in residential institutions.

Under new legislation, thousands of such testimonies are to be sealed and “withheld from public scrutiny” for 75 years.

Now, People Before Profit local election candidate Gino O’ Boyle will table a motion at next Monday’s meeting of Sligo County Council requesting the local authority to contact the Leo Vardaker and Katherine Zappone on the issue.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Cllr O’ Boyle says anybody found guilty should not have their identify protected by the Retention of Records Bill.
