Local election candidate says cuts to grants for elderly and people with disabilities are ‘savage’

An Independent candidate in the local elections in Sligo has described cuts to grants for the elderly and people with disabilities as ‘savage.’

Last week, a number of local politicians welcomed funding for the Housing Adaptation Grants Scheme in Sligo.

But in response to a query from Ocean FM Radio, Sligo County Council confirmed there has been a cut in the allocation.

This year’s allocation is just over €1.4m.

The allocation in 2018 was originally below €1.4m but was subsequently increased to €1.6m.

Independent election candidate Corey Whyte said that when Fine Gael and Independent Alliance ministers visited Sligo recently, there was no mention of the proposed cutbacks.

He’s calling for the cuts to be reversed.
