Ballisodare college now set to close at end of academic year 2021/2022

The board of directors of the trustees of St Mary’s College in Ballisodare in County Sligo has decided to close the school at the end of the academic year in 2022.

It had originally been planned to close a year earlier.

However, parents who have enrolled pupils in the school for this coming September will be able to send their children to the school at that time.

However, no first years will be enrolled for September 2020 or for years after that.

This follows a meeting of the board of the trustees — the Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust — yesterday at its headquarters in Kildare.

There is a strong ongoing local campaign to get more students to enrol in the school and so ensure it remains open.

County Councillor and teacher at the school Cllr Marie Casserly says today’s decision is disappointing.

Local Fine Gael election candidate Thomas Walsh had this reaction to this afternoon’s developments.
