Despite petition, request from councillors, Sligo not among towns proposed to have directly-elected mayors



Sligo is not included among towns in which there are now proposals for directly-elected mayors.

That’s despite over 1,000 signatures having been collected for a petition calling for a directly elected mayor in the town.

And following a proposal by Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry at last month’s meeting of councillors from the Sligo Municipal District, it was agreed to write to Local Government Ministers Eoghan Murphy and John Paul Phelan calling for Sligo to be included in the May poll

however, the government has now approved proposals for the role of a directly elected mayor to be created in Cork, Limerick and Waterford.

The proposals will be put to a public vote on the 24th May- the same day as the local and European Elections.

The government had been criticised recently for the lack of detail on the proposal.

Following yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, details have emerged which show that if the plebiscite passes, the mayors will have powers in housing, planning, roads and the corporate function of the council.
