Proposals to honour singer Charlie McGettigan

South Donegal councillors are proposing to honour Ballyshannon native Charlie McGettigan on the 25th anniversary next April of his winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994.

At yesterday’s meeting of councillors from Donegal Municipal District, Cllr Barry O Neill proposed the Freedom of County Donegal be given to Charlie McGettigan, who now lives in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim.

Also at yesterday’s meeting, councillors enquired about a holding civic reception for paralympic cyclist Katie-George Dunlevy, whose father is from Mountcharles, and about erecting a plaque of remembrance to acknowledge the work of the late Jim White, a Donegal businessman, hotelier and TD, who died in 2014.

Cllr O Neill has been telling Ocean FM News why he made the proposal at this time to honour Charlie McGettigan.
