New Owenteskna water treatment plant will benefit Kilcar, Carrick and Glencolumcille areas

A new water treatment plant that was officially opened in South West Donegal this morning will benefit almost 3,000 people in the Kilcar, Carrick and Glencolumcille areas, west of Killybegs.

Construction of the water treatment plant has resulted in the water supply in the area being taken off the Environmental Protection Agency’s remedial action list last month.

This morning, the chairperson for Donegal Municipal District, Cllr Micheal Naughton, officiated at the official opening by unveiling a plaque at the site of the new plant at Owenteskna.

David McLoone, from Irish Water, explained how the scheme is supplied from Lough Nalughraman, an upland source which provides a good quality raw water supply.

But before the new treatment plant was built, the water supply received only minimal treatment.

As a result, the Owenteskna/Kilcar Water Supply Scheme was placed on the EPA’s remedial list.

However, with the new plant, the raw water is now treated more effectively with a range of processes.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Eamon Gallen, managing director of Irish Water, described the new plant as ‘state of the art.’

The new treatment plant at Owenteskna is part of €73m committed by Irish water to water supply projects in County Donegal.
