Sligo IFA raises concerns over electronic ID tags for lambs

Sligo IFA is raising concerns about the new electronic identification tagging system for lambs.

From next June, The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine announced that all sheep moving off a holding must be identified electronically.

This will require either a single electronic slaughter tag – where lambs less than 12 months of age are moved directly from the birth holding to a slaughter plant or an electronic tag set – in the case of all other sheep movements.

This system has not been welcomed by some farmers as it is costing them significantly more to implement it.

Rural Development Chairman with the IFA, Eddie Davitt Chairman, says there are a number of reasons why this system is not working for farmers.
