Sligo pushing ahead with new bike rent scheme

Sligo County Council is looking for a least 50 bicycles for free to help it set up a new bike scheme in the town.

Sligo will be the first town of its size in Europe to have such a scheme.

It follows a successful pilot programme under which bikes could be rented from and returned at various locations.

The bikes are rented by downloading an app, paying by using a credit or debit card and scanning in a code that’s specific to each bike.

The pilot scheme was operated by Ecotravel, based in Drumcliffe, Co Sligo.

County Council Director of Services Tom Kilfeather says he hopes the new bike rent scheme will be up and running by the summer.
